Character descriptions

The Family

Felix Ducotel: M, 40s-50s – Would have flourished as a poet, but instead is managing a shop in French Guiana. His heart is in the right place, but he has as much business sense as a Labrador retriever. Can be stubborn, usually when he is wrong.

Emilie Ducotel: F, 35-40 – Felix’s loving wife. A practical woman, she tries to steer Felix into keeping things on track. Loves her family, but wishes she were not the only one around with common sense. 

Marie Louise Ducotel: F, 20 – Felix and Emilie’s daughter. A dreamer, a good girl, young and naive. She is eagerly waiting for wonderful things to happen to her. 

The Convicts
These characters are male but actors of any gender will be considered for the parts

Joseph: 40-60 – Cynical and intelligent, and of very dubious morality. Could sell water to a drowning man. 

Jules: 30-50 – Something of a sybarite, very gallant, just wants serenity and comfort, alas not to be found in prison. An educated man, he is philosophical about his fate.

Alfred: 25-35 – A bit of a rake, but so charming. A self described “man of action,” when the situation calls for muscle, it’s Albert who provides. 

The Conflict

Henri Trochard: M, over 40 – Has power and wields it. Things go his way because he does not allow otherwise. Profit is his god. 

Paul: M, 20s – Henri’s nephew, he has picked up unfortunate ideas from his uncle. Paul’s thoughts are mainly occupied with Paul. 

Supporting roles

Mme. Parole: F, middle age – A strong-minded customer and neighbor of the Ducotels. 

Lieutenant: M, 20s – A very dashing young man in uniform.
