His youngest, and favorite, Cordelia, refuses to join in her sisters’ lies, so Lear banishes her, and divides his kingdom in two, planning to keep a retinue and stay, in turns, with his older daughters and their husbands. They, however, conspire to strip Lear of any remaining power or dignity and he ends up abandoned in a thunderstorm with only his fool and one loyal knight to care for him. Facing the truth about his daughters and himself, Lear descends into madness even as Cordelia brings an army from France to rescue him. Though she reconciles with her father, the sisters’ army defeats Cordelia’s and she and Lear are imprisoned, where Cordelia is hanged. Broken by this last blow to his ancient heart, Lear dies with her body in his arms.
