Later in his life, Shakespeare started to blend the traditions of tragedy and comedy, and nowhere are the contrasts of the genres more stark than in The Winter’s Tale. While the players are representing princes and kings, the story’s focus is smaller in scope: one family’s domestic troubles.
Leontes, the king of Sicilia, in paranoia convinces himself that his pregnant wife Hermione has had an affair with his closest friend and king of Bohemia, Polixenes.
His unshakable certainty in this jealous fantasy combined with his authority as king are enough to bring death and destruction to all he holds dear. That is, unless the passage of time is enough to reconcile it all – well, that and a few crafty disguises, young love, music, merriment, and the rediscovery of his cast out child.
